BBC Stargazing Live
This was a series of 3 consecutive outdoor public engagement events aimed at celebrating the sky at night and enthusing families to get outside and learn about galaxies and solar systems. The events ran in conjunction with the Live Broadcast on BBC Two in January 2014 presented by Brian Cox and Dara O’Briain from the Jodrell Bank Observatory.
5-7000 visitors to the live events saw amazing science demos, alongside comedy and music in the stage show, as well as getting the chance to train like an astronaut, be part of the DIY Solar System, see images from the world’s best telescopes and hear directly from astronauts at NASA. Local experts and astronomers were on hand to answer questions and give further inspiration.
Elements of each event were filmed for regional broadcast and at Egham there was a live link to the TV show. Venues included Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, The Forum Norwich and the Royal Holloway University in Egham and made use of existing facilities supplemented by a range of temporary outdoor installations including covered staging, large outdoor LED screen, inflatable structures, catering units and toilets.
Particular challenges faced by the diversity of each location – from modern city centre to historic site – meant each venue demanded bespoke planning rather than fitting one event model to all 3 venues and we overcame tight timescales and a hefty travel schedule by running 2 production crews, one for the 2 day build of each event and the other to run the live days and derig. We used clever lighting to enhance architectural features, branded gobo’s and projections to cost effectively transform event spaces into spectacular looking branded evening events.
